The three weeks after surgery went very quickly until time for the initial stimulation. I was so nervous. I had heard so many different stories about children’s reactions to the sound for the first time. I just wanted Belle to feel comfortable. Jolie attached the processor and hooked it up to her computer. I could tell the first moment that Belle was hearing something. She looked around to that side and gave us all a weird look. She kept looking around like she was trying to figure out what was going on. Jolie asked Belle if she could hear, and Belle shook her head. We all laughed, and Belle smiled. I knew it was going to be OK! Jolie gave us three MAPs to work through in the next two weeks. She explained how the processor worked and told us to read through the manual several times. We were on our way! Over the next few days, we worked with the wearing options for the processor. Having the processor and battery pack behind her ear was too heavy, and it wasn’t secured enough for my peace of mind. We decided to use the Children’s Battery Pack, which pins to the clothing. This option is still working very well. She is used to having the processor on her ear, and the battery pack is secured in case the processor and coil fall off. Belle has already bonded with her processor. She wants it on all the time and comes right to me if something isn’t on correctly. We are so thankful!
6/5/06-initial stimulation-Belle definitely heard something right away. She was looking around trying to figure out what was going on. She smiled a lot and also got a little scared at one point and hid her face in my arm. Overall, a good day.
6/6/06-Belle woke up and asked where her processor was!
6/7/06-Belle is doing a lot of lipreading. She is not understanding a lot of what I’m saying.

“Mama, I hurt my toe!”, “I want to go to Wal Mart.”, “Emma, What are you doing?”
